Project Description

The As-Yet Unswept Desert

2014-2017, Mitzpe Ramon

At a waste heap on the periphery of Mitzpe Ramon, in the heart of the desert at the edge of the Ramon Crater, there are deposits of refuse: rusty cans, glass shards, ceramic bits, scraps of household objects, empty ammunition cartridges, pieces of asbestos …   among them dry desert plants awake in after-rain green and flowering, bones, stones, and other surprising elements that create local memento mori preserved by and within the desiccation, existential witness to the encounter between originary landscape and a heap of unrefined contemporary reality.

My work at this site is ongoing, and includes still-life photographs capturing the triangle of desert/home/military that is expressed in physical presences of objects and panoramas of the locale, starting with the desert landscape, continuing on to a military base and extending to the town’s neighborhoods, reflecting a kind of contemporary silt of existential elements in a horizontal archeology mirroring of our lives. The process of onsite photography becomes something like detective work. As noted by the American photographer Edward Weston, “the camera sees more than the eye”, so that subsequent viewing reveals details and connections unseen in real-time experience.

“The Unswept Floor”

The scattered objects connect associatively to the ancient mosaic “The Unswept Floor” from the second century C.E., attributed to Herakleitos as a copy of an original by Sosus of Pergamon (second century B.C.E.).   The mosaic depicts food remnants or perhaps a collection of zoological and botanical objects. The objects are arranged as a display of vestiges of the live world that have undergone the grinder of human usage, mediated by the artist’s view in a process of identification, sorting, and categorization.   The photographs of the “as-yet-unswept desert” invite a similar process of observation, including and integrating astonishment and equanimity; feelings of familiarity and estrangement, certainty and doubt; identification and dislocation of connections; prophecy and memory; personal reflection and outward contemplation of social, environmental, and cultural spaces.
